What Are STIs?

In 2022, more than 2.5 million cases of chlamydia, gonorrhea, and syphilis alone were reported in the United States. These sexually transmitted infections (STIs) and others are on the rise. STIs are spread by bacteria, viruses, or parasites. An STI can pass from person to person in blood, semen, or vaginal and other bodily fluids.

Even condoms won’t necessarily protect you from all STIs. Some sexually transmitted infections, like herpes and HPV, can be passed on by contact with skin in areas not covered by a condom.

Anyone who has sex could get an STI. Young people aged 15-24 and pregnant women are at increased risk.

How Do I Know If I Have an STI?

Many STIs are asymptomatic. This means they have no recognizable symptoms. No symptoms means no reason to test, right? Wrong! You and your partner(s) should be tested regularly whether or not you have the following symptoms:

  • Sores or bumps on the genitals
  • Painful or burning urination
  • Discharge
  • Pain during sex
  • Lower abdominal pain
  • Fever
  • Rash over the trunk, hands, or feet

Getting Tested and Treated

If you’re unsure if you have an STI or think you may have been exposed to one, we offer free and confidential screenings for both females and males. The Pregnancy Help Center provides free testing for chlamydia and gonorrhea with a urine test. It’s easy and painless.

Results are available in about a week. Testing is free, but a $15 donation will cover the cost of the test.

Left untreated, chlamydia can cause pelvic inflammatory disease (PID) in women up to 40% of the time, causing irreversible damage to your fallopian tubes and uterus. Fortunately, chlamydia is easily treated and cured with antibiotics, so it is vital to catch it early.

We offer testing for chlamydia and gonorrhea, as well as the medication to treat chlamydia. We can refer you to another clinic for gonorrhea treatment, as well as for HIV testing and treatment.

We do not profit from any of your sexual health or pregnancy decisions.
