Types of Ultrasounds
There are two main types of pregnancy ultrasounds: transvaginal and abdominal. Both use a device called a transducer that sends sound waves into your body. In a transvaginal ultrasound, the transducer is inserted into the vagina; for an abdominal ultrasound, it’s moved across the belly.
Your ultrasound appointment will begin with an abdominal scan. In early pregnancy, you will also be offered a transvaginal scan. The ultrasound exam may reveal important details like the location of the pregnancy, the presence of cardiac activity, and, if you’re having more than one baby. If you (and your support person or partner) would like to watch the ultrasound, you’ll be able to see it on a wall mounted monitor and get pictures if you would like to have them.
